What kind of tutoring do you do at the LDC?

The Therapeutic Tutors at the LDC are specially trained in the Orton-Gillingham (O-G) Multisensory Approach to Language Development and/or Multisensory Math. O-G based Therapeutic Tutoring is individualized to each client's needs. Lessons are provided on a one-to-one basis with explicit instruction given on the rules and patterns of the English language. This method is multisensory and systematic in that it follows a logical step-by-step process using each of the five senses to reinforce concepts. Each lesson is systematic at sequential, following a logical step-by-step process that builds on steps that have already been learned. This method is based on the alphabetic-phonic system that builds on sound/symbol relationships and has been found to be a key component in teaching people to read. Students benefit by having the opportunity to learn the structure of language resulting in word attack skills in spelling, reading, and writing. Increased reading fluency and comprehension are developed as well as independence in learning, self-esteem and self-advocacy. The Multisensory Math approach uses all senses; visual, auditory, tactile, and kinesthetic, to help the learner's memory store and retrieve mathematical facts. Multisensory Math lessons use manipulatives, activities, and games in a hands on approach to develop an understanding of math concepts. Clients build strategies and patterning to solve mathematical problems.
